Should You Use a Resume Addendum?

For most people, a resume is sufficient to summarize one’s work experience, education and interests. However, in a highly-competitive employment market, you may want to go the extra mile and create an addendum that will help differentiate you from other job seekers.

An addendum (addenda is the plural form of the word) is a single page that accompanies your resume. It elaborates on a particular skill or past experience in more detail. You can use an addendum to talk about items such as:

    • Specific work projects
    • Volunteer work
    • Internships
    • Life experience
    • Travels
    • Computer skills
    • Software knowledge
    • Equipment operation experience
    • Classes taught or attended
    • Hobbies
    • Specialized training
    • Leadership experience

Ask yourself if the subject you want to discuss in your addendum is relevant to the job opening you’re applying for. Does is demonstrate to the employers that you have a unique ability? Does it prove that you are a good candidate for the job?

Finally, consider whether the subject is interesting. While your fascination with collecting exotic butterflies seems important to you, your prospective employer may not be as engrossed and might not be able to draw the relevance to your employability.

Resume addendums can be helpful in providing additional information that is too detailed to include on the limited real estate of your resume. Once you’ve written yours, decide whether to include it with your resume based on each individual position you’re applying for. You may even want to save it for your interview, when you can offer it to the employer as a leave-behind to give him or her a better insight into your background.

A resume addendum is just one type of “extra” to consider creating for your job search.
